Free Barbell Plate Calculator

Know Exactly What to Load on Each Side.

Enter your target weight, choose your bar, and select the plates you have. Get a balanced loading setup without doing the math between sets.

Pounds or kilograms. Custom bars. Your available plates.

Plate Loading Calculator

Your target is the total on the bar: the bar, both sides of plates, and any collars you count.

Female or male (optional)

Plate calculations are the same for everyone. Choose your actual bar weight and available equipment.

Equipment units

Switching converts your current equipment to the same physical weights (marked “converted”). It doesn’t swap in standard plates.

Include the bar, plates, and any collars counted below. Up to 1500 kg (software limit, not a lifting recommendation).

Bar weight

Common lb equipment options, not exact equivalents across unit systems (a 45 lb bar is about 20.41 kg). Any bar suits anyone — pick the one you actually use.

Not included by default.

Available plates

Sample inventory: 2 pairs of each standard size. Adjust it to match your equipment. “Pairs” means matching plates for both sides: 2 pairs = 4 plates, two available for each side.

UsePlate (lb)PairsRemove

Up to 16 sizes and 20 pairs each; sizes to 0.01 lb (software limits).

Calculated in your browser. Your entries aren’t sent, saved or tracked.

Your Loading Setup

Your plates for each side will appear here after you calculate.

Less Plate Math Between Sets.

Your target weight includes the bar and both sides of plates. This calculator turns that total into a clear loading setup using the equipment you actually have.

Your Target. Your Equipment. A Clear Setup.

  • 01

    Balanced Loading on Both Sides

The same plates on each side, listed largest to smallest, with the full equation shown.

  • 02

    Your Available Inventory Respected

Only the plate sizes and pairs you mark as available are used — never more than you have.

  • 03

Clear Alternatives When Exact Isn’t Possible

If your plates can’t make the exact target, you see the closest lower and higher totals and choose one yourself.

Build Your Setup in Three Steps.

  1. 1

Enter your target and bar weight.

Choose pounds or kilograms, a common bar or a custom one, and optional collars.

  2. 2

    Select your available plate pairs.

Turn sizes on or off, set how many pairs you have, or add custom sizes.

  3. 3

Review the plates to load on each side.

Then download or print your setup for the gym.

How the Plate Loading Calculator Works

1. Subtract the base weight. The bar and any collars you include make up the base. The rest of your target must come from plates.

2. Split it evenly. The remaining weight is divided equally between the two sides, so each side carries exactly half.

3. Search your inventory. The calculator checks combinations of the plates you marked as available, never using more pairs than you have. It does not simply grab the biggest plate first, so it can find exact combinations a quick “largest-first” approach would miss.

4. Pick the clearest setup. An exact match comes first. Among exact matches, it prefers the fewest plates per side, then larger plates. Plates are listed largest to smallest.

When the exact target isn’t possible, you see the closest lower and higher totals your equipment can make, with the difference from your target. Nothing is rounded silently and a heavier load is never chosen for you.

Different inventories, different answers. Two lifters with the same target can get different valid combinations because they own different plates. Both can be correct.

Confirm the load fits your bar and stays within your equipment’s rated capacity.

Worked example · pounds

  • Target 135 lb, 45 lb bar
  • 135 − 45 = 90 lb of plates
  • 90 ÷ 2 = 45 lb per side
  • Load 1 × 45 lb on each side

Worked example · kilograms

  • Target 100 kg, 20 kg bar, two pairs of 20 kg plates
  • 100 − 20 = 80 kg of plates
  • 80 ÷ 2 = 40 kg per side
  • Load 2 × 20 kg on each side

Who This Calculator Is For

A good fit

Women and men loading a barbell whose bar, plate and collar weights are known — in a home gym, a commercial gym, or anywhere you want a clear setup without mental math.

Needs separate checks

  • Smith machines, whose effective bar weight varies by machine.
  • Cable stacks and selectorized machines, which don’t use loose plates.
  • Sleeve length, plate fit, and bar, rack or equipment rated capacity — this calculator does not check them.

Plate Loading Calculator FAQ

Does the target include the bar?

Yes. The target is the total weight: the bar, the plates on both sides, and any collars you choose to include.

Are the displayed plates for each side?

Yes. The “Load this on each side” list is what goes on one side. Load the same plates on the other side.

What does “pairs available” mean?

A pair is two matching plates, one for each side. Two pairs means four plates in total: two available for each side.

Can I use a 15 kg or specialty bar?

Yes. Choose a listed bar or select Custom and enter your bar’s actual weight. Specialty bars often differ from standard weights, so check yours.

How do I include collars?

Turn on “Include collars in the total” and enter the combined weight of both collars. Each side is assumed to use an equal-weight collar.

Why can’t I reach my exact target?

Your available plates may not combine to that exact amount per side, or you may not have enough pairs. The calculator then shows the closest lower and higher totals your equipment can make.

Will the calculator choose a heavier weight automatically?

No. When there is no exact match, you choose the lower or higher alternative yourself. Nothing is rounded silently.

Why does switching units produce unfamiliar plate sizes?

Switching converts your current equipment to the same physical weight in the other unit, so a 45 lb plate shows as about 20.41 kg. To use standard plates for the other unit, select “Load Standard Equipment”, which replaces your configuration.

Does Female/Male selection change the setup?

No. Plate calculations are the same for everyone. The selection is optional and never changes the plates, bar or target.

Can this check whether plates fit my bar?

No. It does not check sleeve length, plate fit, or bar, rack or equipment capacity. Confirm the load fits your bar and stays within your equipment’s rated capacity.

Is my information saved?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Your selection, equipment, target and setup are not sent, saved, or included in analytics.
