How the Recipe Nutrition Calculator Works
The recipe total is the sum of its ingredients. Each ingredient’s label values are scaled from their basis (per serving, per 100 g or per 100 mL) to the quantity you used, then every ingredient is added together. An ingredient missing calories, protein, carbohydrates or fat is never counted as zero — it is left out and flagged until you complete it.
Equal servings divide the total. One serving = recipe total ÷ number of servings. Changing the number of servings never changes the ingredients or the recipe total.
Resizing changes the ingredients. Scale factor = desired servings ÷ current servings, and every quantity is multiplied by it. Per-serving values stay the same. Cooking temperatures and times are never scaled. Larger or smaller batches may need changes to equipment, cooking time, or preparation.
Weighed portions use the finished weight. Portion nutrition = recipe total × portion weight ÷ measured finished weight. The finished weight is never estimated from raw ingredient weights, because cooking changes it. This assumes the calculated nutrients remain in the finished recipe and are distributed evenly.
- Cooking away water changes weight, not calories: the same nutrients end up in less food, so each gram of the finished recipe contains more.
- Drained fat, discarded cooking liquid, bones, peels and other discarded material can change what is actually retained. This calculator does not subtract them.
- No nutrient retention or loss from cooking is modelled.
- Raw and cooked nutrition records are not interchangeable. Use a record that matches the state in which you weighed each ingredient.
Recipe nutrition and portion calculations are the same for women and men. Your personal nutrition targets may differ.
Worked example · fictional demonstration data
- Entire recipe
- 2,400 kcal · 160 g protein · 280 g carbs · 70 g fat
- 4 equal servings (÷ 4)
- 600 kcal · 40 g protein · 70 g carbs · 17.5 g fat each
- Finished weight 2,000 g · 300 g portion (300 ÷ 2,000 = 15%)
- 360 kcal · 24 g protein · 42 g carbs · 10.5 g fat
- Resize 4 → 6 servings (× 1.5)
- Every quantity × 1.5 · recipe total 3,600 kcal · per serving still 600 kcal
The 4/4/9 estimate for those macros would be 160 × 4 + 280 × 4 + 70 × 9 = 2,390 kcal. The calculator keeps the 2,400 kcal listed by the ingredient records.

Recipe Nutrition Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate nutrition for a homemade recipe?
- Add every ingredient with its nutrition label values and the quantity you used. The calculator scales each label to that quantity and adds the ingredients together for the recipe total, then divides it into servings or weighed portions.
What is the difference between servings and recipe scaling?
- Servings divide the same recipe into equal parts — the ingredients and recipe total don’t change. Resizing changes every ingredient quantity by the same factor (desired ÷ current servings), so the recipe total changes but each serving stays the same.
Should I weigh ingredients raw or cooked?
- Weigh each ingredient in the same state as its nutrition record: raw weight with raw values, cooked weight with cooked values. Raw and cooked records are not interchangeable.
Why does finished weight matter?
- Cooking changes how much the recipe weighs. Weighing the whole finished recipe and your portion lets the calculator work out what share of the recipe you are eating. It is never estimated from raw ingredient weights.
Does cooking away water remove calories?
- No. Evaporating water lowers the weight, not the calories. The same nutrients end up in less food, so each gram of the finished recipe contains more.
What about drained fat or discarded cooking liquid?
- Anything you drain or discard can take some nutrients with it. The calculator doesn’t subtract it, because the amount retained isn’t known — so the result may be higher than what you actually eat.
Can I enter a nutrition label manually?
- Yes — that is how every ingredient is entered right now. Food search isn’t available on this site yet. Choose per serving, per 100 g or per 100 mL, then enter calories, protein, total carbohydrates and fat as listed.
Can I convert cups to grams?
- No. A cup’s weight depends on the food, so there is no universal conversion. Enter grams or ounces when the label supports weight, or milliliters for labels listed per 100 mL or with a stated serving volume.
Do women and men get different recipe totals?
- No. Recipe nutrition and portion calculations are the same for women and men. Your personal nutrition targets may differ.
Can I print a recipe card?
- Yes. Print Recipe Card prints the results, ingredient breakdown, notes and assumptions. It is a planning card, not an official Nutrition Facts label.
Is my recipe saved automatically?
- No. Your recipe is not saved automatically. Download a recipe file to restore it later. Nothing is stored in your browser or on a server.
Can I use this as an official product nutrition label?
- No. It is a planning estimate, not a labelling compliance service. Product labels have their own regulatory requirements.
