How the Meal Macro Calculator Works

Values are scaled from a nutrition basis. Each label lists nutrients per serving, per 100 g or per 100 mL. Per 100 g, the multiplier is grams eaten ÷ 100; per serving, it is the number of servings; per 100 mL, it is milliliters ÷ 100. Each nutrient is multiplied, then the foods are added together.

Portion accuracy affects the result. A kitchen scale gives more consistent numbers than estimating by eye. Ounces are converted by weight (1 oz = 28.349523125 g).

Raw and cooked weights are not interchangeable. Cooking changes a food’s weight, so match your portion to the state described by the label or record — raw weight with raw values, cooked with cooked.

Food records and labels can differ. Different brands, recipes and databases list different values for similar foods. Use the label for the product you actually eat.

Missing data is not treated as zero. A food without calories, protein, carbohydrates or fat isn’t added to a meal total until it is completed. Fiber is only totaled when every food lists it; otherwise a known fiber subtotal is shown with the missing foods named.

Total carbs and net carbs are different. This calculator uses total carbohydrates, as listed on most labels. Net carbs (which subtract fiber and sometimes sugar alcohols) are not calculated or substituted.

The same foods and portions contain the same calculated nutrients regardless of this selection.

Worked example · fictional demonstration data

A sample label (not a real food) lists per serving:

    • 200 kcal · 20 g protein · 25 g carbohydrates · 5 g fat

    At 1.5 servings, each value × 1.5:

    • 300 kcal · 30 g protein · 37.5 g carbohydrates · 7.5 g fat

    The simplified 4/4/9 estimate for that serving would be 20 × 4 + 25 × 4 + 5 × 9 = 225 kcal, not 200. The calculator keeps the label’s 200 kcal per serving.

Calories come from the label or record you entered. Label energy can differ from protein × 4 + carbohydrates × 4 + fat × 9 because of rounding, fiber, sugar alcohols and food-specific energy factors, so the listed calories are kept.

Displayed totals may differ slightly because nutrition labels and results are rounded.

    Who This Calculator Is For

    A good fit

Adults who want a practical estimate of one meal’s calories and macros using database records or nutrition labels.

    What it isn’t

    • It does not replace individualized medical nutrition guidance.
    • It is not a full diet plan or meal program. For batch recipes, servings and resizing, use the Recipe Nutrition & Portion Calculator.
    • It does not check ingredients or allergens; a label or record may not identify every ingredient.

    Meal Macro Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate macros for a meal?

Add each food with its nutrition values and the basis they’re listed for, then enter how much you’ll eat. The calculator multiplies each label value by your portion and adds the foods together.

Should I enter raw or cooked weight?

Match the label or record. If the values are for the raw food, weigh it raw; if they are for the cooked food, weigh it cooked. Mixing them can noticeably change the result.

Can I enter my own nutrition label?

Yes. Choose per serving, per 100 g or per 100 mL, then enter calories, protein, total carbohydrates and fat as listed. Fiber, serving weight and serving volume are optional.

What if my food is missing from search?

Food search isn’t available on this site yet, so every food is entered from its nutrition label or another record. Manual entry works fully.

Why do calories not exactly match the macros?

Labels round their values, and fiber, sugar alcohols and food-specific energy factors affect the listed calories. The calculator keeps the label’s calories and shows the simplified 4/4/9 figure only as a reference.

Does the calculator use total or net carbohydrates?

Total carbohydrates. Net carbs are not calculated or substituted.

Can I convert cups to grams?

No. A cup’s weight depends on the food, so there is no universal conversion. You can enter grams when the label states a serving weight, or milliliters for labels listed per 100 mL or with a stated serving volume.

Do women and men get different food totals?

No. The same foods and portions contain the same calculated nutrients regardless of this selection. The selection never sets a target either.

Can I compare a meal with my daily targets?

Yes, if you enter the targets you use. This compares one meal with the daily targets you entered. It does not account for other meals.

    Is my meal saved automatically?

No. Your meal is not saved automatically. Download a meal file to restore it later. Nothing is stored in your browser or on a server.

What information is sent during food search?

None right now — food search isn’t connected, so nothing you enter leaves this page. If search is added later, only the search words would be sent to the nutrition-data service, never your Female/Male selection, targets or meal.
